Interview Insights

In an exclusive interview, Dacalty shed light on the creation process and his vision for the future:

The Inception of Mosh Pit Masala

Q: Can you share the intriguing backstory behind the inception of Mosh Pit Masala?

Dacalty: “Mosh Pit Masala wasnโ€™t my brainchild; it was RXZOR who birthed the concept of Moshpit Tapes. The plan was to drop Vol.1 and Vol.2. RXZOR sent over a set of beats, including Laxmi Vedi, Saroja, and Rambo. I thought, why not blend moshpit culture with South Indian spices? Hence, Mosh Pit Masala was born. We worked on it for over a year without ever meeting in person. Anohnymouss did additional programming for two tracks and featured in one. Sanjeevi Eshwar mixed and mastered the entire album in a last-minute rush to release it before my birthday. The track โ€œDevil Onโ€ was recorded just two days before release, and โ€œCโ€ created the album art.”

Q: Looking ahead, what future projects are you excited about?

  • Dacalty: “Weโ€™ve got a lineup of projects in the works, but the real focus is on dropping high-quality music videos. We grind hard on sound and lyrics to deliver fire tracks, but the struggle is real when it comes to video editing and shooting. Quality shoots need serious cash, and itโ€™s tough when artists arenโ€™t pulling in revenue. Our art should be generating funds to create more dope music. Every project is a hustle, but itโ€™s all about how the people vibe with it. We pour our hearts into every track and project. Once itโ€™s out, we donโ€™t look back. The audience decides if itโ€™s a hit. Itโ€™s our art, and we deliver it with everything weโ€™ve got.”

Q: How do you envision your journey shaping up in the realm of rap, both creatively and personally?

  • Dacalty: “Every album is a new chapter, each teaching me something fresh. Take ‘No Return’ โ€“ it was the quickest to wrap up. On the flip side, ‘Moshpit Masala’ was a marathon. The mixing and mastering took ages, pushing the release to November-December 2023, though it was slated for January 2023. Mixing and mastering ainโ€™t just about time; itโ€™s about money too. Revenue streams played a big role in the timeline. Each project is a grind, but itโ€™s all part of the hustle.”

Thoughts on MTV Hustle Tamil

Q: What would you say about the upcoming famous TV show MTV Hustle Tamil?

  • Dacalty: “I think it will come next year, providing a great platform for many artists to gain recognition. Shows like MTV Hustle give artists a big opening and a chance to showcase their talent to the world. An artist named King gained recognition and a breakthrough after appearing on MTV Hustle. Luck plays a significant role for every artist. Even with 100% skill, that 1% of luck is crucial. We never know which song will become a hit. Artists should create without expecting anything in return.”

Mosh Pit Masala: A Sonic Explosion

Released in 2023, “Mosh Pit Masala” is Dacalty’s most ambitious project to date. The album is a potent mix of high-energy tracks that fuse traditional Tamil rhythms with modern hip-hop beats. Each song in the album addresses a different aspect of social and political life in Tamil Nadu, making it both a musical and cultural manifesto.

Notable Tracks and Lyrics

  1. “Block” – A collaboration with MC Devesh and Kronixx, this track is a high-octane anthem about breaking barriers and challenging societal norms. The chorus, “Vidiyalai nokki nadandhuvom, thadai edhuvum illai” (We walk towards the dawn, there are no barriers), encapsulates the spirit of resilience.
  2. “Wanted” – Featuring A-Gan and RXZOR, this track delves into the struggles of the youth in urban Tamil Nadu. The lyrics, “Velicham thedinaal, irul thodarum” (When searching for light, darkness follows), highlight the persistent challenges faced by marginalised communities.
  3. “Sambhavam” – A free verse collaboration with RXZOR, “Sambhavam” is an introspective piece that critiques the socio-political landscape. The lines, “Aarvalam seyyum kaalangal, theeratha vedhanai” (Times of chaos, unending pain), reflect the disillusionment with contemporary politics.
  4. “D EVIL ON” – Teaming up with Alloyed and RXZOR, this track blends aggressive beats with dark, contemplative lyrics. “Irulil neengi, velichathil ser” (Escape the darkness, reach the light) is a call to action for listeners to rise above their circumstances.
  5. “Ennada Dei!” – This track, also featuring RXZOR, is a playful yet incisive take on everyday struggles and societal hypocrisy. The catchy hook, “Ennada dei! Unmai sollu” (Hey! Tell the truth), resonates with the audience’s demand for honesty and transparency.

Thematic Depth and Social Commentary

Dacalty’s music is deeply rooted in the socio-political context of Tamil Nadu. His lyrics often address issues like caste discrimination, political corruption, and the struggles of the working class. This thematic depth is a significant reason for his widespread appeal among Tamil youth who find their experiences and aspirations reflected in his verses.

In “Mosh Pit Masala,” Dacalty doesn’t shy away from critiquing the status quo. His music serves as a mirror to society, reflecting both its beauty and its flaws. By combining traditional Tamil elements with contemporary sounds, he bridges the gap between the past and the present, creating a unique musical experience that resonates with a broad audience.

Conclusion

Dacaltyโ€™s journey in the rap world is a testament to his dedication, creativity, and resilience. From the inception of “Mosh Pit Masala” to his future projects, he continues to push boundaries and create music that resonates with a wide audience. His insights into the industry, his passion for high-quality production, and his ability to blend cultural elements with modern beats make him a standout artist in the Indian hip-hop scene.
